Scientific Enquiry in the Primary School
This part of the science curriculum is where teachers traditionally feel insecure. The course will outline and exemplify good practice in scientific enquiry across the primary school. It will help teachers identify the individual skills of science and demonstrate how each can be developed in their pupils. The inset will also provide guidance in pupil planning and recording of scientific enquiries at every age.
Throughout the day, simple, eye-catching activities that can be used immediately on return to the classroom will be used to illustrate the points made.
Young Scientists
This course is aimed at teachers, Teaching Assistants or Classroom Assistants, who work with the very young children in the nursery or reception classes. It is a hands-on inset with a wide range of enjoyable activities that will both excite and stimulate young children into exploring the world around them.
Sensible Science Assessment
Although many teachers enjoy teaching science, often they feel uncertain when assessing the work that their pupils produce. This course takes each delegate through the process of assessing science sensibly and speedily.
The second part of the day focuses on how assessment for learning techniques can be embedded into the science curriculum in any primary school.
Thinking Skills in Primary Science
We often sit our pupils in groups for science lessons … but do they work as a group… and are they really thinking about the work that is being done? This course demonstrates a clear structure for incorporating thinking skill strategies into a school’s science curriculum. Teachers and subject leaders will receive a range of options to consider, enabling them to tailor a thinking development programme for science that will fit their own class or school.
Thinking Skills in the Primary School
There is a wealth of published information on developing thinking, thinking skills and cognitive acceleration in education. At times the sheer amount of guidance can be overwhelming. This course provides an overview of current practice in developing thinking in the primary school and considers effective ways of incorporating a development programme without overloading the primary curriculum. Appropriate strategies for use in all subjects, for all age groups will be exemplified.
